Reputed as one of the oldest dog breeds and the most ancient European toy breed, the Maltese has a curious history.
Phoenician sailors visiting the island of Malta for trading around 1500 B.C. are credited for discovering the first Maltese dogs. From the 5th century onwards, dogs resembling the Maltese were found in Greek art.
The Maltese was introduced to England in the early 1300s, where upper-class ladies took a fancy to them for their diminutive size.
The Maltese is spirited, lively and playful. Gentle, loving, trusting and devoted to its master. Highly intelligent. Good at learning tricks. Bold and quick to sound the alarm in case of suspicious noises.
It is a classic companion dog, graceful and lovable. It does well with other non-canine animals and other dogs.
Training and socialization also play key roles in how a Maltese turns out. If you treat him like a helpless baby or spoil/indulge him, he is likely to end up overdependent and insecure, or bratty and yappy. Instead you should require him to show the same good manners as you would expect from a larger dog.
Very sensitive and responsive to nonforceful training, many Maltese excel in competitive obedience and agility. Unfortunately they are notoriously difficult to housebreak – consider an indoor litterbox, or a doggy door leading outside to a small covered potty yard.
