Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, a British statesman, Lieutenant-Governor of the Dutch East Indies and Lieutenant-Governor of Bencoolen. Alongside William Farquhar, Sir Stamford Raffles set up a trading outpost in Singapore in 1819.

This was the start of Singapore's journey to transform into a modern country!
He left Calcutta in search of a new British settlement in December 1818 to replace Malacca, which has been returned to the Dutch.

On 29 January 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles officially arrived in Singapore and signed a treaty on 6 February 1819 with Tengku Abdul Raman and Sultan Hussein. This means that Sir Stamford Raffles was given the green light to set up a trading outpost, which many different traders from foreign lands traded there! This brought an enormous amount of wealth to Singapore and thus was able to develop at an exponential rate.

Raffles set up various schools and churches during his time, all in native languages! He also banned slavery, closed gambling dens, and many other things to curb the vices. This played a huge role in maintaining law and order, which played a huge part into laying the base foundation of what Singapore is today!
